Is it important that Jesus actually lived?
The question is, does it matter if Jesus was a real person? Is the historicity of Jesus necessary? The answer to that is absolutely. The truth of the historicity of Jesus is no minor issue or unncessary part of history. The world, whether it believes in Him or not, benefits from the historisity of Jesus. According to Wallace (2019) “Many people who are considered to be great moral teachers, like Ghandi and Martin Luther King Jr., who both cited Jesus as a source of information and wisdom are acceptable subjects of study, but Jesus, who is the most influential moral teacher of all time, is not because His historicity is in question”. If His historicity is accepted, then Wallace (2019) states that, even non-believers will be able to assess His moral wisdom as they would any other teacher because His life and teachings would be taught and accepted. The world needs the teachings of Jesus as do the believers and followers fo Christ. The Christian faith and the foundation of the assurance of salvation and forgiveness of sins for all who call on His name is all based on the fact that Jesus lived, that He was who He said He was, and that He did what the Bible says He did. Without Jesus being the actual historical person that is described in the Bible, the faith of millions of followers is in vain. As man is fallen and broken an unable to save himself, we are in need of a savior, an unblemished lamb for sacrifice to cover the sins of man and right our relationship with God. If Jesus did not exist historically as a man, there is no perfect lamb, there is no sacrifice and there is no propititation and there is no forgiveness of sin and man is utterly lost. If Jesus did not exist historically, then all of the old testament prophesy and the promise of God to redeem His people to Himself is all false and God is a liar. If Jesus was not a historical person, then the plan of rescue fails and in as much so does God. As Peter in the book of Acts Ch 4, filled with the spirit, preached and said, “then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. 11 Jesus is“‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” Jesus followers know that He is real and was a real historical figure, we bet our eternal lives on it. Wallace (2019) said it very well when he said, “Even if everything else in my life were in turmoil, I would still be confident my eternal destiny is secure, based on what Jesus did for me over two thousand years ago. The historicity of Jesus is the source of my confidence and strength as a Christian”. We have assurance in who Jesus is and it is of the utmost importance to those who are still lost that they find and have that assurance also, and the only way they can do that is if the historicity of Jesus is true and they turn to Him.
